DIA DE LA CIUDAD DE ZAMBOANGA

This is a celebration of the Charter Anniversary of the City every February 26. Zamboanga City's status as a chartered city was formally inaugurated on February 26, 1937. Every year the city proudly marks being one of the oldest Philippine Chartered cities by bursting its tradition exuberantly with a spree of celebration with schools and teens battling it out to produce the Cheerdance champion for the year (cheerdance competition), among others. The City likewise commemorates the life and legacy of the first and only Zamboangueño Senator Roseller T. Lim (dia di roseller). It is aslo a time for the city to honor the top Zamboangueño achievers for the year in various fields of endeavor who have contributed to the city's benefit (local achievers awards). A grand parade, the floral float competition featuring the city's official seal (competicion del selyo de Zamboanga),and a lot more that gives the city a grand birthday bash!

This year, the City Government of Zamboanga celebrates the 71st DIA DELA CIUDAD DE ZAMBOANGA from February 9-26, 2008. This year’s theme of celebration is   “UNIDO ESPUERSO PARA CONTINUA EL CAMINO DE PROGRESO…ADELANTE ZAMBOANGA!”


DIA DI ROSELLER

The City Government of Zamboanga remembers “Dia Di Roseller” in commemoration of the birthday of the first and only Zamboangueño Senator Roseller T. Lim on February 9, 2008. The commemoration is now recognized as a special event in Zamboanga City by virtue of S.P. Ordinance 283 authored by Hon. Rudy Lim.

To commence the celebration, a commemorative mass will be observed at 8:00 in the morning at the Saint Joseph Parish Church. A wreath –laying ceremony will follow at the R.T. Lim Monument at R.T. Lim Boulevard which will be participated in by local/national offices, the academe, and civic organizations. The event is highlighted by the Awarding Ceremony of the “Five Outstanding Youth Leaders” of Zamboanga City in Astoria Regency, at 7:00 in the evening.

The Dia Di Roseller is observed in cooperation with JCI-Zamboanga.

CHEERDANCE COMPETITION

This is Year 6 for the inter-school cheerdance competition where competing squads from various high schools, colleges, and universities compete. The following are the competition's mechanics:

Date:     February 22, 2008, 1P.M.
Venue:  Zamboanga City Coliseum
GUIDELINES OF THE COMPETITION:

1. A five-man committee chosen by the sponsor shall form the panel of judges and their decision is final and not appealable.
2. The cheer dance team shall have a number of dancers or participants not less than 25 members and not more than 35 members, exclusive of the crew or propsmen whose number of members shall be between 5-10. An official shall be designated by the organizer to count the actual performers during the competition proper and his count of performers shall be the official number of participating individuals. Each participating team shall be responsible to send a representative to the official table during the performance of his team to counter-check the number of performers.

It is recommended that the performers or dancers of each team shall wear a costume distinct from the crew or propsmen to expedite the counting.
The team that will exceed or have less number of performers than the minimum required during the actual performance shall be disqualified from winning the first, second and third prizes.
3.      Each cheer dance team shall be given a minimum time of five (5) minutes and maximum of (8) minutes to perform. The time shall count from the entrance which is signaled by the outset or start of the music or beating of drums, or shouting of cheers;
An official timer shall be designated to time each performance during the contest proper and a penalty of point –deduction from the final score shall be imposed for teams with over or under time performances, to wit:

                        5 points –   first 1-30 sec.
                        5 points- 31-60 sec.
                        2 points – every minute thereafter
4.      The team must cheer and shall carry the theme in its performance, and must show the same thru a banner, streamer, or poster; at any stage of their presentation. The yell line is ADELANTE ZAMBOANGA! ASIA’S LATIN CITY! The competition is open to any performance which can include a dance, acrobatic stunts, or the use of indigenous or native instruments. The performance however, shall not be dangerous, unhealthy or scandalous to public and performers. Audience participation is allowed but not counted in the ratings.
5.      The execution of pyramids shall be limited to a height of two and a half levels of a person to ensure the safety of the performers. A violation of this rule shall automatically disqualify the cheering squad from the competition.
6.      Aerial entrance or any stunt that would require an airborne performance is strictly prohibited. Throwing or jumping is however allowed provided that the performers take the precautionary measures to ensure a safe execution.
7.      The use of live animals, blooded weapons, or pyrotechnics as props is strictly prohibited.
8.      The costumes of the performers should not be scandalous or vulgar to the public, and must exhibit general good taste. As a matter of policy, inexpensive costumes or wardrobes are encouraged.
9.      The competition is open to secondary and tertiary schools. There must be only one team representing a school with participants/performers of 11 – 25 years of age. The team must be endorsed by the school head as the official participating squad.
10. The endorsement by the school head shall be signified at the registration form issued by the organizer.
11. The deadline for the submission of registrations shall be on or before February 15, 2008. The organizer shall only accommodate the first 18 submitted entries as the official participating cheering squads.
12. The teams shall be judged by their over-all impact. The criteria of judging are to wit:
Synchronization                   - 40%
Artistry/ Choreo/Style          - 40%
Costume                             - 10%
Acrobatic skills                     - 10%
13. The sponsor shall not be liable to any accident or injury before, during, or after the cheer-dance competition. Each team shall assure its safety and take the necessary precautions in its performance acts. However, Paramedics will be made available for any eventuality. Security and marshals shall be provided by the organizer.
14. A waiver shall be signed by the school head or the trainer of the participating team relieving the organizers/sponsors from whatever extent of liability for  any unforeseen accident/injury  that his/her team may be involved into before, during, or after the performance.
15.  There will be three major winners in this competition that will receive a cash prize and a plaque to wit:
1st Prize           - P20,000.00
2nd Prize          -   15, 000.00
3rd prize           -   10,000.00

LOCAL ACHIEVERS AWARDS

The City Government of Zamboanga is in search of outstanding Zamboangueños who have attained exceptional  achievements and victories in various fields of endeavors.

AWARD Categories:

1. Top Local Corporate Taxpayer  
Honor to be bestowed on a corporation for paying highest tax locally thus directly benefiting the city of Zamboanga. This will be based on the Business Taxes paid to the Office of the City Treasurer.

2. Top Local Individual Taxpayer
Honor to be bestowed on an individual taxpayer for paying highest taxes locally thus directly benefiting the city of Zamboanga. The will be based on the Business Taxes paid to the Office of the City Treasurer.

Top Local Achievements:

3. Sports   
Honor to be bestowed on an individual or a team for outstanding athletic performances (gold medalist or its equivalent) in their respective event areas in internationally/nationally recognized competitions. Nominations for this award may be made by any individual. Performance results must be verifiable and submitted in writing, issued by competent authorities.

4. Culture & Arts (Performing Artist / Visual Artist)         
Honor to be bestowed on an individual or group for promoting Zamboanga’s culture through music, dances, paintings, and literary works. Nomination for this award may be made by any individual, group, organization or institution. Nomination must be accompanied by an exhibit in scrapbook form or whatever ideal form.

5. Public Service
Honor to be bestowed on an individual or group for dedication and exemplary service to the people of Zamboanga. Nomination for this award may be made by any individual, group, organization or institution. Candidates may come from any field, including academia, military and other government entities. Nomination must be accompanied by documents attesting to the candidate’s commendable public service.

6. City Government Service
Honor to be bestowed on an individual for extraordinary performance in the service of the city government of Zamboanga. Not more than three (3) nominations for this award must be made by the City Human Resource Management Office. Nomination must be accompanied by documents attesting to the candidate’s laudable service.
 

7. Community Service (Barangay / Civic Organization)
Honor to be bestowed for exemplary service rendered by an individual or group in the upliftment of a barangay. Nomination for this award may be made by any individual, group, organization or institution. Nomination must be accompanied by pertinent documents attesting to the candidate’s community service.

8. Investment Promotion     
Honor to be bestowed on an individual or a group for promoting Zamboanga City as a sound investment area through their products. Nominations for this award may be made by any individual. Candidates may come from the field of business. Nomination must be accompanied by pertinent documents attesting to the candidate’s business interests in the city. 
 

9. Tourism Oriented Establishment
Honor to be bestowed on a tourism-oriented establishment for its major contributions in the promotion of the city’s tourism industry through its outstanding delivery of service. . Nomination for this award may be made by any individual, group, organization or institution.


10. Orgullo de Zamboanga Premiar          
Highest honor to be bestowed on a single individual in recognition of his/her significant and meritorious contributions to the city. Candidates may come from any field, including academia, business and government. Those contributions must be documented and supported by several individuals who can personally attest to the importance of the candidate’s contribution. Nomination for this award may be made by any individual, group, organization or institution.

COMPETICION DEL SELYO DE ZAMBOANGA

The competition is open to all participants of the civic-military parade from the government and non-government agencies in the city.

MECHANICS

1. Materials to be used in the competition should be made of fresh flowers only. The Participants shall have their prerogative to use any type of fresh flower;
2. Size of entry should not be less than 1.5 meters but not more than 2 meters in diameter. Size not in accordance with the specified measurement shall automatically be disqualified;
3. Color and presentation of flowers must be an exact replica of the city’s official seal;

4. Each participating office will be provided with a sticker of Zamboanga City’s official seal as their reference;

5. Entries should be mounted on a four-wheel vehicle and shall lead the group/office it represents;
6. Participants should provide a STAND for their entry for proper display during the judging period; all entries will be displayed at designated areas in front of the stage near City Hall as soon as the participating group will reach City Hall;

7. The height of the entry stand should be at least 5 feet tall;
8.  The organizing committee shall not be held liable to any damage of entries while on display;

9. Entries will be judged according to the following criteria:

10. The first prize entry will automatically become the property of the City Government of Zamboanga;

12.Winners will be announced during the program (on stage at City Hall) right after the parade;

GRAND PARADE

The grand parade is scheduled on February 26, 2008. This will be participated in by local nad national offices, military and civic organizations, the academe and other non-government insitutions. The assembly time is at 1:00 p.m. at Mayor Jaldon Street.The parade will be followed by the Main Program at the stage beside City Hall.
