Mayor Beng Climaco has expressed concern on the reported inclusion of Zamboanga barangay leaders in the narco list or list of government officials in the country involved in illegal drugs as released by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).

Nonetheless, she said, the City Government supports the decision of the President to make public the list of barangay officials with alleged involvement in the illegal drugs trade. “It is very imperative that our citizens be informed of who are involved in illegal activities. Those who have no involvement must not worry.”

According to reports, 2 barangay officials in the city – one a barangay captain and the other a barangay kagawad are included in the list of narco politics.

The mayor earlier has reminded PDEA to follow due process to avoid violation of anybody’s rights and that appropriate action must be done.

She said PDEA and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) will be filing cases against those involved and for the meantime, the city government will wait for the guidance of higher authorities.

“It is high time to cleanse our barangays. As the primary local government unit, barangays must be governed by officials who are not only able, and competent, but also those whose morals and integrity are intact, with zero criminal record,” the mayor added. (Sheila Covarrubias)
