Mayor Beng Climaco announced yesterday a new Zamboanga International Airport project costing P9.87 billion has already been endorsed as priority to the national government by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA).

Climaco said the endorsement was made by the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), citing a study that showed the existing airport in Barangay Baliwasan is no longer viable for future expansions, thus the need for a new airport location.

A new airport location is also necessary due to the increasing air traffic and accelerating growth of the city in the Western Mindanao Development Corridor, being one of the country’s primary gateways to the Association of Southeast Asian (ASEAN) countries.

Climaco also thanked Presidential Peace Adviser Jesus Dureza because the airport transfer project was one of his commitments to elevate is to the NEDA.

The proposed airport location is in Barangay Mercedes, east of this city.

Another project being endorsed to NEDA to include Zamboanga City is the missing links in the Mindanao arterial road network amounting to P3.4 billion that will connect several municipalities which have large potential for industries and development.

She said one of the missing road links is the Zamboanga west coast road, the Siocon-Sirawai-Sibuco-Zamboanga City road.-(Vic Larato)
