Mayor Beng Climaco on Monday declared that the imposition of curfew in Zamboanga is not imminent stating that the situation does not warrant it.

The mayor stressed that the city has maintained a level of normalcy despite the ongoing firefight between government troops and the Maute group in Marawi City that prompted President Duterte to declare martial law over Mindanao Tuesday night.

She explained that the imposition of curfew would hamper activities as well as the way of life of people particularly those who are working on graveyard shifts, those who are traveling and those who encounter emergency situations such as purchasing medicines and other stuffs late at night.

“As of now the situation in Zamboanga remains normal and does not warrant the imposition of curfew,” the mayor pointed out.

Nonetheless, City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer Dr. Elmeir Apolinario said some barangays are implementing curfew but based on the request of the residents themselves.

During a meeting of the City Peace and Order Council (CPOC) last week, the body said it will await guidelines from the Office of the President with regards to the imposition of curfew.

Meanwhile, Mayor Climaco urged residents anew to fully cooperate with the authorities in the implementation of the stepped-up security measures for their own safety and protection.

She likewise appealed to the public to bear with some inconveniences as these are all for everyone’s security and safety.

The mayor also asked the people to refrain from forwarding unverified text messages or posting unverified information in the social media as well as to report to authorities the presence of suspicious individuals, items or abandoned vehicles in their area through hotline numbers 09177113536/09177945590/09189357858 or 9269274, she added.
