The city government led by Mayor Celso Lobregat has highly praised Zamboanguena weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, gold medallist in the recently concluded Asian Youth/ Junior Weightlifting Championship held in Jeonju, Korea.

Diaz garnered two gold medals under the youth division (58 kilogram category), the first ever for Zamboanga in the Asian event. She also bagged a silver medal in another competition in the same category.

Diaz, a student of the Universidad de Zamboanga, will represent the country in the Olympics Games in 2010.

Aside from Diaz, two other members of the Zamboanga weightlifting team also brought honor and pride to Zamboanga. They are Nestor Colonia of the Culinan National High School who bagged three silver medals under the youth division (56 kilogram category) and Jaymie Mendoza of the Universidad de Zamboanga, who garnered 7th place in the Junior Division (53 kilogram category).

“We are very proud of them”, Mayor Lobregat revealed referring to the three weightlifters. “They brought honor and pride to Zamboanga”.

He said Diaz, Colonia and Mendoza are considered epitome of today’s youths for they exemplified perseverance, determination and willpower.

Lobregat has provided support and assistance to the Zamboanga team on their trip to Korea for the 9-day international competition. This time, the mayor has vowed to assist in Diaz’ training in preparation for the Olympic Games in 2010.

Diaz and Mendoza together with Elbert Atilano, head coach of the National Weightlifting Center and other coaches paid a courtesy visit on Mayor Lobregat at City Hall morning of December 11.

The Asian Youth/ Junior Weightlifting Championship was participated by a total of 23 countries including the Philippines.

Atilano in an interview confided that Diaz’ gold haul in the Asian championship held from Dec. 1-9, was the first for Zamboanga. “I have been coaching for the past 21 years and it is only now that we garnered gold in the Asian event”.

He recalled that the highest honor obtained by Zamboanga in the Asian event was in 1984 when the Zamboanga team hauled a silver medal. In 1995, Alvin de los Santos garnered a gold medal but it was in the Southeast Asian event.

Meanwhile, Atilano said in preparation for the 2010 Olympic Games, Diaz will be undergoing training starting January 2009. During her training, she will be provided with monthly honoraria by the Philippine Sports Commission, the Universidad de Zamboanga will provide the quarters and the training facilities while Mayor Lobregat and the city government will provide the supplements such as foods and other needs.
